Born in Cape Town, South Africa Carl Albrecht graduated with honors from the Tygerberg School of Graphic Art in 1995.
As a painter and award winning portrait artist at the age of 19, he traveled to Europe for the first time in 1996 to gain knowledge and inspiration. In 1997 he began his studies at CityVarsity School of Media and Creative Arts in Cape Town. At the end of his first year he was awarded for cell animation, shortly after which he was introduced to 3d animation.
In 2000 Carl relocated to Germany where he was hired as an animator. That same year, he created “Universal”, a vector based animated short that was featured at various film festivals in Europe, including the 12th Stockholm International Film Festival´s animation program. In 2002 Carl re-located to Berlin, where he started an internship at a 3D production company. After two years of full time employment, he was hired by Centroid Motion Capture in Berlin where he was introduced to motion capture editing and occasionally assisted during shoots. In 2006 he began his freelance career, working with companies like the award-winning broadcast design studio, Metaphrenie where he would work continuously until the end of 2008. In 2009 Carl joined the mbox GmbH team on a regular basis, where among other generalist tasks it was his responsibility to create an intro and outro animations for the massive “Magic Box” project, a 16×16 meter installation featured at the Expo 2010 in Shanghai. In 2013, m box GmbH produced a 3D digital short, “Jumper” which Carl wrote, directed and animated.
In 2014 Berlin based Rise FX hired Carl as a cloth TD and roto animator for “Captain America – The Winter Soldier” and as a cloth TD for “American Renegades”, in 2016. After several remote jobs for the New York based creative agency Midnight Commercial in 2016, Carl was approached by Trixer GmbH, one of the leading VFX production houses in Germany as lead cloth TD on features such as “Spider-Man: Homecoming” and “Thor: Ragnarok”. In 2018 he was hired as a cloth TD for the Netflix Series, “Lost in Space” as well as doing RND work for “Captain Marvel”. In September 2018 MPC Film hired Carl to work as a senior technical animator in Canada for a year, during which time he worked on 4 different feature films. In November 2019 Carl relocated to the UK, to join DNEG. He currently works as a senior Creature FX TD at their London office.
