Born in South Africa, Carl Albrecht graduated with the highest distinction from the Tygerberg Art Center in 1995 where he studied Graphic Design and Printmaking.

As a painter and award winning portrait artist at the age of 19, he traveled to Europe for the first time in 1996 to gain knowledge and experience. In 1997 he began his studies at CityVarsity School of Media and Creative Arts in Cape Town. At the end of  his first year he was awarded for traditional cell animation, shortly after which he was introduced to 3D design and animation.

In 2000 Carl relocated to Stuttgart, Germany where he was hired as an animator. That same year, he created “Universal“, an animated short that was selected for the 12th Stockholm International Film Festival´s animation program. In 2002 Carl re-located to Berlin, where he started an internship which lead to full time employment at Bluue, a 3D Character Design Studio. In 2004 he was hired by Centroid Motion Capture where he was introduced to motion capture editing. In 2006 he began his freelance career, working with award-winning Berlin based studios such as Metaphrenie and m box on a regular basis. At m box he created an intro and outro animation for their massive “Magic Box” project, a 16×16 meter installation featured at the Expo 2010 in Shanghai. In 2013 m box produced an animated short, “Jumper” which Carl wrote, directed and animated.

Driven by his passion for character work, Carl started freelancing as a visual effects artist in 2014. The Berlin based studio RISE hired him as a generalist on “Captain America – The Winter Soldier” and as a character FX TD for “American Renegades” in 2016. Later that year Carl was hired by TRIXTER, one of the leading VFX studios in Germany to work at both their Munich and Berlin offices on “Spider-Man: Homecoming” and on “Thor: Ragnarok” thereafter. In 2018 he worked on an episode of the Netflix series, “Lost in Space” and did some work for “Captain Marvel“. Later that year, the academy award winning MPC Film hired Carl to work as a technical animation key artist at their Montreal office for a year, during which time he worked on 5 different feature films. In November 2019 Carl relocated to the UK to join DNEG, one of the world’s leading visual effects and animation studios. He currently works as a lead Creature FX TD at their London office.
