Born in Cape Town, South Africa Carl graduated with honors from the Tygerberg School of Graphic Art in 1995. As a painter and award winning portrait artist at the age of 19, he traveled to Europe for the first time in 1996 to gain knowledge and inspiration from fine art museums and exhibitions.

After traveling he began his studies at CityVarsity School of Media and Creative Arts in Cape Town. At the end of  his first year he was awarded for traditional cell animation. After his studies, Carl was approached to relocate to Stuttgart to work as a Flash animator for one year. During this time, he created “Universal”, a vector based 2D/3D animated short that was featured at several film festivals in Europe, including the 12th Stockholm International Film Festival.

In 2002 Carl re-located to Berlin, where he started an internship at a 3D character house. After two years of full time employment,  Carl was hired by Centroid Motion Capture in Berlin. There he was introduced to motion capture editing and occasionally assisted in a motion capture studio for one year.

In 2007 he began his freelance career and was hired by the award-winning broadcast design studio, Metaphrenie where he would work continuously between 2007 and 2008 as a 3d generalist and motion capture editor for television idents.

In 2008 Carl was also hired by Dyrdee Media GmbH to create 3d animations for their award winning “MTV Game Awards” spot as well as 3D animated idents for the German childrens channel KIKA.

In 2009 Carl joined the m box GmbH team on a regular basis. At m box he was responsible for creating two one minute intro and outro animations for the massive “Magic Box” project, a 16×16 meter installation featured at the Expo 2010 in Shanghai. In 2013, m box GmbH produced a 3D digital short, “Jumper” which Carl wrote, directed and animated.

Other companies Carl have worked at include Cine Chromatix,  Lug Animation GmbH where he created motion graphics for three consecutive Volkswagen Group Nights and Rise FX, the largest visual effects studio in Berlin where he worked as VFX Artists on features such as “Captain America – The Winter Soldier” in 2014.
